Scurvy Fundamentalists React To Tragedy
This week we've had a massive tragedy. Dozens of innocents killed in the most callous way possible. Everyone, everywhere very, very sad.
Except for those devoutly religious enough to bring their unique view to the whole event. I've been reading statements to the effect that God did not intervene because he is polite enough not to go where he isn't welcome. That the answer to this is that our children should pray before every school day, also, More Guns.
The facts are that god did not intervene because god does not exist. No evidence can be shown that god has ever intervened in anything, and there's no reason to believe he should start now. To use a bloodbath as a tool to wedge prayer into schools, or worse, to smugly scold America for removing prayer from schools is disgusting and weak minded.
Mike Huckabee:
Well, you know, it's an interesting thing. When we ask why there is violence in our schools, but we've systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place for carnage because we've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, responsibility, accountability? That we're not just going to have to be accountable to the police, if they catch us. But one day, we will stand in judgment before God. If we don't believe that, we don't fear that.
Bryan Fischer (American Family Association):
In 1962 we kicked prayer out of the schools. In 1963 we kicked God's word out of our schools. In 1980 we kicked the Ten Commandments out of our schools. We've kicked God out of our public school system. And I think God would say to us, 'Hey, I'll be glad to protect your children, but you've got to invite me back into your world first. I'm not going to go where I'm not wanted. I am a gentleman.
What these liars are doing is far worse than simply snarking on a horrible tragedy. What they're saying to the parents of those children, many of whom I'm sure are devout believers is: "Your God has forsaken your children and sacrificed them to make a point about politics". That is a hateful thing to tell these people.
Further, they're deflecting attention from the heroic principal and teachers who put themselves between the children and a dangerous maniac. These people were slaughtered while going well above the call of their duty. That this lunatic was able to break into a school and murder those children had nothing to do with the existence of the God of Abraham, and had everything to do with the steps that led an aresnal of weapons to end up in the hand of a mentally unstable psychopath.
Representitive Louis Gohmert said:
"Hearing the heroic stories of the principal, lunging, trying to protect … I wish to God she had had an (Colt M4 Carbine in her office locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out and she didn't have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands, but she takes him out, takes his head off before he kills those precious kids".
That one should seriously argue that the answer to this kind of tragedy is to have military assault weapons in the closet of a grade school principal shows the sick nature of the pro-gun argument. What would solve problems like this? Not having guns. I've searched but have so far been unable to find a case in the UK where a lone psychopath was able to kill 27 people with a cricket bat before beating himself to death.
That the right wing and gun happy would use this for political gain disgusts me. Please just mourn. Accept the fact that perhaps having the largest cache of guns isn't necessarily the answer to gun crime.
